What can the Scots do at the 2024
World Cup of Darts? That is one of the big questions prior to the tournament getting underway.
Peter Wright and
Gary Anderson managed to reach the final of the nations tournament last year, but this time around, the Scottish chances are rated a lot lower.
This is mainly due to the poor form Wright is currently struggling with. 'Snakebite' is having a very poor season by his own lofty standards, with an absolute low coming in the Premier League Darts with only two wins in sixteen weeks. His teammate Anderson however, is having a good season, including a Players Championship title and a Euro Tour title.
Wright says the World Cup of Darts is nothing like any other tournament. ''The World Cup is a totally different tournament,” stated the two-time world champion in a preview conversation with the
official website of the PDC. “You're not just playing for yourself, you’re playing for your partner, you're playing for your country, and that’s more important."
In the past, Wright managed to win the World Cup of Darts twice. Incidentally, he also did so with two different partners. In 2019, he took the title with Anderson, while in 2021 John Henderson shined at Wright's side. Anderson was absent from the World Cup of Darts from 2020 to 2022, but made his return to the Scottish team in 2023. "It's a lot of pressure playing with Gary because so many people would love to play alongside Gary Anderson, and I'm honoured to represent Scotland with him," Wright says. "We have a good record together, and we're only getting older and wiser, so hopefully all of our experience will help!”
Scotland is the number four seed at the World Cup of Darts. So as one of the top four nations, Wright and Anderson do not have to compete in the group stage. They will play their first match in the knockout phase on Saturday, when the 12 group stage winners of the group stage join the four top nations in the last 16.
