GRANDSLAM GP1 WHITLOCK1A
Simon Whitlock and Dave Chisnall have claimed top spots in Groups B and D after victories over Adam Gawlas and Justin Pipe respectively.
Whitlock battled back from 4-0 down to see off Gawlas producing a brilliant comeback to win through 5-4 and secure top spot in an important game in Group B with maximum points.
It was all down to doubles with Whitlock hitting 0/9 and as a result Gawlas went 2-0 up with a break and followed this up with a hold of throw to make it 3-0 with a 180 for an 11-darter.
12 consecutive missed darts at doubles saw Gawlas going one away but a pivotal break saw Whitlock taking out 77 to reduce the deficit.
Gawlas further along the line at 4-2 up missed a match dart and Whitlock closed the gap to make it 4-3. A decider was then forced and Whitlock completed the comeback.
While Chisnall saw off Justin Pipe in a 5-2 win in a hard fought victory to also claim top spot despite hitting only 5/24 on the doubles in a game which wasn't a classic but the St Helens ace got over the line.
