Whitlock smashes defending World Grand Prix champion Van Gerwen in phenomenal victory

Simon Whitlock has once again seen off Michael van Gerwen following up his World Matchplay victory with a remarkable win to reach the semi-finals at the World Grand Prix.

Whitlock restricted Van Gerwen to only two legs throughout the tie to win 3-0 against the defending champion with a 101.7 average and 50% on the finishing doubles.

‘Mighty Mike’ had gone back towards his top form at times this week but averaged 96 with his finishing doubles at 2/12 and there will now be a new winner in the double start tournament.

Whitlock took first blood to begin the tie with the first set going 3-1 to ‘The Wizard’ as he conjured up finishes of 107 and 76 and a 101 average despite MVG’s 108 to begin.

MVG started to miss darts at doubles with four missed and Whitlock took out 100 on two double tops to break in the first leg of the second.

His finishing doubles went up to 5/7 as he doubled his lead and he claimed it without reply from there to go one away.

Van Gerwen missed tops for a 116 checkout and Whitlock led in set three and despite Van Gerwen holding from there, Whitlock went one away from a crushing win.

He left 170 and missed the bull and after Van Gerwen missed a 70 checkout, it was a 25 checkout on double four which claimed it.
