Andy Baetens has reached the final of the WDF World Championship. The Belgian defeated
Dennis Nilsson 5-2. The Swede fought bravely and even grabbed a 1-2 lead, but after that Baetens was far too good.
The top favourite for the World Championship at
Lakeside: Baetens clearly showed what he's all about. In the first set Baetens still had start-up problems, and had to let Nilsson take the set. The second set he won though, 3-0 taking out each leg in fewer than five visits.
Nilsson was able to take the lead again after the first break, 1-2 in sets. From the fourth set, however, Baetens flew away: he made it 2-2 and it almost seemed a shame that there was a break.
However, after the break Baetens flew away. He threw as many as four 180s in two legs, and finished the set with an 11-darter at 81 to lead 3-2 in sets.
In the sixth set, Baetens seemed to enjoy the first leg for a moment, too much. But he sprinted back to the lead thanks to a 130 score and then fine 125 finish. Nilsson got tap after tap. Baetens also won the sixth set in style with a 15-darter: thus making it 4-2.
In the final set, Nilsson bit back. Probably he had released the tension, knew he was going to lose and the darts went away easier. He even had seven perfect darts in the third leg of this set. He was also still able to make it 4-3 in sets, but the tension grabbed him again. Baetens then finished in 16 darts: 5-2.
Thus, Andy Baetens will face Jelle Klaasen or Chris Landman in the final tomorrow night.
