Despite a relatively successful 2023 WDF World Championship at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, Matthew Edgar saw one glaring issue during the event.
"I'd say it's was more good than bad in terms of what the WDF had to deal with picking up from the BDO and putting everything into place," Edgar begins his reflection in conversation with Online Darts. "I thought they did a fantastic job. They put on a tournament, they guaranteed prize money. Players knew what they were playing for. I can't believe I'm saying this is a positive but that's how bad the system was they picked up."
Despite the iconic nature of Lakeside and its historical significance, Edgar forsees a potential change in venue for the World Championship. "Personally I think this is going to move eventually over to Assen in Holland where they did the World Masters," he explains. "I think that's probably the long-term location for the WDF World Championship."
The biggest issue Edgar had though was with the live stream and its accompanying live chat. "You appeased the small-minded minority at the expense of the product. It's the small-minded minority who want to make silly comments on there because they think it's funny and it damaged the product."
"I don't know all the different terms for what people say these days, there's so many different words for it, all ending in phobia. Something like this is actually disgusting like is this because it's faceless or is this where Society has now gone that we think this is acceptable?" Edgar questions aloud. "These are people that have worked hard and committed to the sport and traveled all around the world to get the points to be there, just to be judged on how they appear. I thought was completely wrong. Looked bad on the WDF and for any sponsors that wanted to get involved."
