Vandenbogaerde didn't realise qualification was needed for WDF Lakeside: "In the past the semi-finalists were automatically invited"

Mario Vandenbogaerde has qualified for the upcoming WDF Lakeside World Darts Championship. 'Super Mario' won one of the two remaining qualifiers at the qualifying tournament in Assen, The Netherlands.

Vandenbogaerde defeated his compatriot Kenny Neyens in the last four and secured himself a spot at Lakeside. "It was a very difficult qualification tournament. There was a lot of pressure on my shoulders and the fact that I still managed to perform makes me very proud of myself."

Semi-final at BDO World Darts Championship

The 48-year-old Belgian reached the semi-finals of the last British Darts Organisation (BDO) World Championships two years ago.

"In the past the semi-finalists were automatically invited to the next World Championship, but now the WDF has taken over the role of the BDO this is no longer the case. Because of the pandemic I haven't been able to play all the tournaments so I had to use this qualifier to qualify for Lakeside. It is a dream come true to play there."

Vandenbogaerde is alongside Brian Raman, Andy Baetens and John Desreumaux the fourth Belgian who will compete at the WDF World Championship early January next year.
