On October 4th and 5th, the World Seniors Matchplay will take place in York, England. Chris Mason will take on Neil Duff in the opening round.
Mason was first active with the BDO for many years and permanently switched to the PDC in 2002. His last appearance at the World Darts Championship came back in 2009. "I got the semi-finals of the World Championship, the World Masters, the World Matchplay... there's a theme here," Mason jokes on YO1 Radio. "I just a bit of a lad and I probably enjoyed the moment a bit too much, then woke up the next day a little bit worse for wear. I was a bit like Jimmy White, but whereas he went out after winning the semi-final, I went out after reaching it."
'Mace the Ace' was involved in an infamous incident in 2007. Mason and Phil Taylor met in the last sixteen at the World Darts Championship. Beforehand, there was a lot of buzz about this match because Mason had lashed out heavily at Taylor in the newspapers. When Taylor finally managed to win the match 4-0, it almost came to a scuffle between the two men on stage. "When that tournament finished, we lived about ten minutes from each other. So we met up and we were fine. It was more out of frustration really," Mason explains. "I think that's why I actually thought it was best to walk away. I was getting more and more frustrated that I wasn't fulfilling my potential and by that time, I'd realised my best darts bad gone. I felt I was becoming bitter so I applied myself to something else, which was the media."
Since his decision to concentrate on his media work, Mason was out of action for a long time until he made his comeback on the World Seniors Darts Tour (WSDT) about two years ago. In the opening round of the World Seniors Matchplay, Mason will take on Neil Duff.
"I'm a big snooker fan and the UK Championship takes place every year at the Barbican Centre in York, it's an iconic venue and it's going to be a privilege to play there. It's a place steeped in history and I can't wait," Mason previews. "I actually do fancy winning one of these. I lost to Lisa Ashton in the World Championship this year in the quarter-finals, missed loads of doubles so that was frustrating but it can happen."
