"I was pissed at myself for doing what I did" - David Cameron bounces back from disappointment to secure qualification for World Seniors Matchplay

David Cameron is the latest player to have qualified for the 2024 World Seniors Matchplay, a tournament to be held in York on Oct. 4 and 5. The 54-year-old Canadian managed to secure his place last Sunday by winning the qualifying tournament in Reading. In the final, he was a 6-5 winner against Andy Boulton.

Cameron had also participated in a qualifying tournament a day earlier, but couldn't secure his spot on that first go. "That was tough. Frustrating at times for sure," Cameron reflected in his post-match interview with WSDT's official social media pages. "In each match, I felt like I kept giving stuff away. But overall, I squeaked through, I had some luck and I'm going to take it. I'm very grateful."

The qualifying tournaments for WSDT events can be gruelling days for players who go deep and as Cameron can attest, the quality is often very high. "There's some great players here which is always going to push you," the Canadian explains. "Guys are just turning up here and playing great darts. We had a new winner here this week and it's great see because we need that."

As mentioned, at the first qualifying tournament, won by James Richardson, Cameron lost out in the semifinals. "I was pissed at myself for doing what I did. I had opportunities to win the match at get through to the final," 'Excalibur' recalls. "But you accept that, turn up again and give it your best. Whatever happens, happens."

Cameron has proven his pedigree on the WSDT already, having won the 2022 World Seniors Darts Masters. As such, he must be considered a dark horse for Matchplay glory. In his victory at the 2022 World Seniors Darts Masters, Cameron defeated Phil Taylor in the final. The 16-time world champion announced earlier that this is his farewell year. "If we end up playing again it would be great and a lot of fun," Cameron concludes. "But on the Seniors Tour, it's always fun. There is a bit of competitiveness there, but at the end of the day, it's older guy darts so you need to have fun!"
