Wayne Warren has received a replica of the BDO World Championship trophy after nearly £2,000 was raised through a crowdfunding campaign.
Earlier this year, Warren had the original trophy collected by the police after refusing to return it which saw chairman, Des Jacklin receive criticism for driving all the way to Wales to collect it.
'Yank' held the trophy without returning it out of dissatisfaction with the prize money received. Normally, the BDO World Champion receives £100,000 in prize money but after the tournament moved away from the Lakeside and due to financial difficulties, he only received £23,000.
Fans decided to help him and started a crowdfunding campaign to get him the trophy he deserves and last Friday, that was delivered to Warren who looks to defend or pass it on to the next champion in the future.
Let's hope Des Jacklin remains under whatever rock he is currently living under...
Fantastic news, I wish I knew about the fund as I would have contributed. Poor old Wayne has had the worst experience of being a champion. Looking forward to seeing Wayne in the world seniors and hopefully in more darts tournaments. How long before the original ends up on eBay?
When Des Jacklin finally accepts the BDO has gone the way of the Norwegian Blue...
