Van Gerwen pleased after whitewash win over Smith: “It was a good start for me”

Michael van Gerwen claimed a whitewash victory over Jeff Smith to start his US Darts Masters campaign last night.
Van Gerwen won the title last year and lauded this win as a good start for him. He sees Smith as a good player but admitted he couldn’t do something special like his North American Championship win.
Despite coming through seemingly with ease, he says that there are no easy games but that as the format gets longer he will get stronger.
"It was a good start for me," said Van Gerwen. "I took my chances and did what I had to do to win this game. Jeff is a good player but he couldn't do something special like he did yesterday.
"There are no easy games, especially in the short format, but now the formats get longer and I'll be more in my comfort zone. I know I can do even better than this and I need to make sure I keep focused."

- Maybe the supposed top players are burnt out from the endless travelling and tournaments, I just don't think they have the dedication or outright desire to win. I think they are more interested in the money and being popular, just keeping their rankings steady. The only thing that mattered to Phil Taylor was winning, not winning a few games to top up the money pot and seeking the fans attention. Maybe there is too many tournaments now and the enthusiasm is gone. This year especially has seen so many different winners and unexpected draws and line ups.richieburnettrocks14-11-2024
