Richie Burnett and
Adam Gawlas advanced to the last eight of the
UK Open in Minehead on Saturday night. Both players caused a surprise at the last sixteen.
Burnett surprised
Peter Wright 10-8. The two faced each other on the Lakeside stage 28 years ago and, just like then, 'The Prince of Wales' secured the victory.
The Welshman led 7-3 at the second interval, but Wright hit back and made 8-8 in the 16th leg after Burnett missed five darts to keep his lead. However he broke the Scotsman in the following leg with a superb 78 finish, before taking out 88 for the match.
The 21-year-old Gawlas reached the quarter-finals of a major tournament for the first time in his career. He beat
William O'Connor, who had knocked out defending champion Danny Noppert in the afternoon session.
Gawlas played one of his best matches ever against O'Connor. The Czech recorded an average of 99 and a finishing percentage of 56%. That proved good for a convincing 10-3 victory.
