"Dared me that I wouldn't, of course I did": Wayne Mardle reveals origins of Hawaii 501 nickname despite never going to Hawaii

Wayne Mardle will forever be known as Hawaii 501 and for his garish shirt and walk-on. But there is a hilarious back story to it all.

Mardle didn't coin the nickname due to a trip to Hawaii saying that it was 'too far' to travel to and instead took it from a trip to Las Vegas. Aiming to not be like the crowd, Mardle wore an awful Hawaiian shirt and was dared to wear it at the World's.

Of course wanting to prove this person wrong, he did so and continue to do it. Then he had some inspiration from a familiar darting face for his nickname coined from a famous TV show where his walk-on theme comes from.

Albeit as he joked he didn't give him any credit for coming up with the nickname. That being the darting legend Bobby George.

"Bearing in mind I've never been because like I said it's too far. For those of you who don't know, flight to LA which takes 12 hours. Then it's six hours from there. Not for me," said Mardle during a Club 501 Q&A for William Hill.

"Whilst in Vegas one year, I bought a horrible Hawaiian shirt. The reason being everyone just wore black or navy or dark grey and I just wanted to look a bit different. Why not. So I bought this horrible Hawaiian shirt for $3.99 from a shirt shop. I said to my friend that I was going to wear it at the World Championship and he basically dared me that I wouldn't. So of course I did. From there the Hawaii 5-0 theme tune was selected and Bobby George said why don't you call yourself Hawaii 501 which I thought was clever."

"I never gave Bobby George credit as he doesn't deserve it," he joked to conclude.
