"Any normal human being would've said sorry or can we start again. But no, I responded with 'Why wasn't I told!?'" - Wayne Mardle recalls infamous TV interview

A five time World Championship semi-finalist and now a renowned and well respected commentator and pundit for Sky Sports, Wayne Mardle has been involved in many memorable moments in darts over the years. However, arguably his most memorable moment came away from the oche.

In a now famous moment, Mardle was invited to talk with Wilfied Genee in a post-match interview and vented his frustrations in a furious rant, not realising he was live on TV at the time leading to an iconic quote from 'Hawaii 501': "Why wasn't I told!?"

In a Q & A on William Hill's Club 501 Podcast, Mardle was asked the question everyone wants to know the answer too... "Why weren't you told?" After a moment's laughter, Mardle composes himself and begins the tale of what really happened.

"Right, so back in 2006 there was the top four of the PDC world rankings versus the top four Dutch players, called the Masters of Darts. Anyway, I had already beaten Jelle Klaasen or Vincent van der Voort, I can't remember. All I needed to do, was to beat Co Stompe and I'm guaranteed a semi-final spot," he recalls. "If I lose that game, I've got to play Raymond van Barneveld over the best of seven sets and he was the BDO world champion at the time so that was going to turn into a chore pretty quickly."

"Well, I played like an absolute moron and lost to Co Stompe. I'm angry, I'm annoyed and I don't want to talk to anyone but I have to do an interview and this is where 'Why wasn't I told!?' comes from," Mardle continues. "It doesn't feel like a proper interview at all. It feels awful by the way. I sit down and someone from sound sticks their hand up the back of my shirt and by this time, I'm a bit sweaty. They start muck around with something in my ear and it was just a mess."

"With that going on, Wilfried Genee starts asking me questions like 'Wayne what happened?' 'Well I don't fucking know do I?'" Mardle remembers with a slight smirk. "I go on to say all sort of swear words and I said 'These are the questions you should be asking me when we're live!' He responded with 'We are live now. There you are on the monitor.' So I then realise, after saying the F-word about ten times that we are in fact live."

"Any normal human being would've said sorry or can we start again. But no, I responded with 'Why wasn't I told!?' and to this day, every single day I get sent it on Twitter. I guarantee, that I've been sent it. It's become a thing," he concludes. "I actually had a greyhound called 'Why wasn't I told?'"
