Martin Schindler will not carry the hopes of the home crowd in Dortmund this weekend after being thrashed by
Jose de Sousa in the opening round of the
European Championship in Dortmund.
De Sousa continued the trend of 100+ averages with 105.28, three 180's and a high checkout of 140 with 54.5% on the doubles as he saw off Schindler 6-1.
'The Wall' put up some scoring resistance with a 101.15 average but crumbled on the doubles with 16.7% (1/6) proving his downfall.
'The Special One' started brightly with a 180 and 84 checkout for a hold and a 12-darter and despite Schindler starting with a 180 on his throw, he was broken after leaving 34 from 161, he missed three darts and allowed De Sousa in.
De Sousa continued to the half way point with a 140 checkout for another 12-darter before Schindler got his sole leg on the board but another break was forthcoming with missed darts at double again from Schindler who left 32 from 172 but miss three darts allowing De Sousa a 62 checkout before sealing the dealing from there.
He is joined in the next round by
Ross Smith who edged past Joe Cullen in a superb performance who produced a comeback to sink 'The Rockstar'.
'Smudger' came from 4-2 down producing an 81 checkout for a 12-darter before breaking again with the same checkout but an 11-darter for 4-4. From there, he held with a 72 checkout and when Cullen missed multiple darts to force a decider, Smith snuck in on double 12 for the win with a 101.6 average and 75% on the doubles.
