Michael van Gerwen, the six-time World Grand Prix champion was talked up as a potential seven time winner this week in Leicester. But he has been dumped out in one of the worst defeats of his career.
It was a head scratcher from the Green Machine as fellow former World Grand Prix champion dismissed him without MVG failing to register a single leg in the contest. Summing up the contest for him was a throwing in of the towel of sorts with a 180 to leave double three at the end. Gurney now moves on to face Stephen Bunting with a big wide open part of the draw.
Van Gerwen was all at sea in the opening set as he lost it 3-0. Gurney started with a 14-dart 51 checkout missing a dart for 1-0. Before then missing a dart for 86 and Gurney mopped up on double 18.
He then finished the set on double eight with Van Gerwen way back and scratching his head and this continued as Van Gerwen couldn't finish 110 and Gurney hit 72 for a 1-0 lead and four on the spin.
Van Gerwen missed darts to get a leg on the board and Gurney made it five straight with a 116 checkout. He missed the bull for 83 and Van Gerwen had to hit double three after hitting 180 in resignation thinking he wasn't coming back.
Gurney then returned for double eight to complete the rail roading of the great six-time champion in double quick time.
