Matthew Edgar has put a new episode online on his YouTube channel, Edgar TV with the talking point being the current two year ranking system and players being given extra opportunities due to nationality or gender.
"Is the ranking system correct? Yes. Is the ranking system fair? No I don't believe so," said Edgar.
Edgar has some reservations about the current ranking system. For example, female Tour Card holders (although currently no woman has a Tour Card) are given an unfair advantage in his view.
For example, the winner of the Women's Series can participate in the Grand Slam of Darts and the best two ladies in the final standings can participate in the World Championship. In addition to the Women's Series, they also have a chance to qualify for those top tournaments through the regular tournaments.
"If Lisa gets in both of these like she has done in the last couple of years, £25,000 before a dart has been thrown in those events will put her 84th in the rankings just 20 places outside of keeping a PDC Tour Card with opportunity in these events to earn significant money."
"It's them top 64 players that we're talking about being affected, it's not so much the top 32 or even like top 50 up. It's around that 64 barrier."
"If Max Hopp missed out on the World Championship, he'd get extra opportunities due to postcode and location. He can obviously play in things such as the German Super League where he can get extra opportunities to play in the World Championship so he can fail getting through the ProTour which players like Steve West and Jeff Smith are only allowed to play in and then get in through another route."
"That will seriously affect the top 64. That is the solution, non ranking qualifiers. If you take a place in the World Championship based on any sort of other situation, that player shouldn't get ranking money for attending or qualifying through a different pool."
"Option B we take the European Tour route where the top 16 players get into the European Tour, they get the money for playing but unless they win their first game, they do not get any ranking money. That would be a fairer system."
