Euro Tour Order of Merit: Michael van Gerwen makes big rise to second spot after winning Hungarian Darts Trophy

Michael van Gerwen has moved up to second place on the Euro Tour Order of Merit after taking the title at the Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest last weekend.
Until the final, Van Gerwen never got into trouble at the Hungarian Darts Trophy. He defeated successively Martin Lukeman (6-2), Gabriel Clemens (6-2), Josh Rock (6-4) and Ross Smith (7-3). In the final, compatriot Gian van Veen offered strong resistance, but the victory went 8-7 to 'Mighty Mike'.
With this title, the Dutchman takes the top prize of 30,000 pounds. In total, Van Gerwen already earned £81,000 on the Euro Tour circuit this season, good for second place in the rankings. Only Dave Chisnall earned more prize money with 88,500 pounds. Following Van Gerwen are Luke Littler (78,500 pounds), Martin Schindler (71,500 pounds) and Luke Humphries (64,500 pounds), among others.
Losing finalist Van Veen kept £12,000. 'GVV The Giant' is now thirteenth on the Euro Tour Order of Merit and has been assured for some time of participation in the European Championship later this season.
With two tournaments to go, the likes of Dimitri van den Bergh (33rd) and Nathan Aspinall (35th) still have some work to do. At the end of the season, the 32 best players in the rankings will compete in the European Championship in Dortmund. This tournament is scheduled from Oct. 24 to 27.

- Maybe the supposed top players are burnt out from the endless travelling and tournaments, I just don't think they have the dedication or outright desire to win. I think they are more interested in the money and being popular, just keeping their rankings steady. The only thing that mattered to Phil Taylor was winning, not winning a few games to top up the money pot and seeking the fans attention. Maybe there is too many tournaments now and the enthusiasm is gone. This year especially has seen so many different winners and unexpected draws and line ups.richieburnettrocks14-11-2024
