Gian van Veen has avenged his defeat from 12 months ago when he was defeated by Luke Littler with 'GVV The Giant' finally winning the PDC
World Youth Championship in heartbreaking fashion.
Jurjen van der Velde who lost 6-5 had five match darts and fell to his knees bursting into tears unable to control his emotions after spurning his golden chance against the high flying Dutchman who is seen as one of the main rivals for Luke Littler's crown in the coming years.
Now though Van Veen has his reward and also gives those at the PDPA Qualifier a sigh of relief. A Van der Velde win would've meant less spots now four will be up for grabs in Wigan. Van der Velde not only has that heartbreak but he now has to head to Robin Park himself.
Van der Velde started red hot as he broke the throw of Van Veen to start the tie before holding the throw pinning 70 on double 16 to make it 2-0.
But Van Veen started to catch fire finally holding throw before breaking with an 81 checkout for 2-2. He was throwing for a 3-2 lead with his average at 109.
A 63 checkout on double three for an 18-darter after previously hitting an 11-darter made it 3-2 to the favourite. Van der Velde stopped the rot at 3-3. He broke with a 116 checkout to make it 4-3 and was throwing to go one away. A 61 checkout sent him one away.
Van Veen held throw in a last gasp effort as Van der Velde sat ready to claim the title. He missed two darts for the title as Van Veen hit 80 to move it one away. Van der Velde was the first to a finish and found his way to double 20.
Van Veen was sat on 82 just in case and the Dutchman made it five darts missed as 'GVV The Giant' took aim at 82 for the unlikely win. He hit bull, double 16 for the win.
