Daryl Gurney edged past Keegan Brown in a hard-fought victory which saw him defeat the Isle of Wight ace in an 11-9 win to move through to the World Matchplay Quarter-Finals and he admitted he was relieved and lucky.
Gurney added that despite playing well in practice he always has to be wary after previous poor performances; after hitting the heights in the back room; also that he just took five minutes to compose him before going on in Blackpool.
'Relieved and lucky at the same time; because I know Keegan gave me a few legs there; but at the same time I could have won the first session 5-0, I missed two darts at a double for 4-0,' said Gurney to Live Darts.
'I was practising so well but I did this in Cologne; I practised so well better than what I did tonight (Wednesday). I obviously averaged 74 that day; but that day I was practising brilliant. I just had five minutes before I went on and I was woke up enough to hit doubles and had enough trebles to outscore Keegan in the first few legs.'
Thoughts on Van Gerwen and Anderson exit
Speaking about Van Gerwen and Anderson heading out; Gurney admitted it would be wrong of him to look forward as a result and that he thinks of it as one game at a time.
'For me it's a bit disrespectful because at the end of the day I don't play Michael and Gary and I don't play the players that beat them I play Keegan Brown; so if I was to look past Keegan and think about Glen Durrant and Mervyn King, I think it's wrong on my behalf; so I've got to think about one game at a time.'
