"He said I had to beat him in a final and I did! " - Luke Humphries calls himself best darter in the world after third title

Luke Humphries managed to capture the title at the Players Championship Finals on Sunday night. 'Cool hand Luke' was behind 5-9 in the final against Michael van Gerwen, but managed to triumph 11-9, winning six legs in a row.

For Humphries, it is his third major title in a span of just seven weeks. Following recent succeses at the World Grand Prix and Grand Slam of Darts, Humphries can now also add the Players Championship Finals to his growing collection.

"To stand here with my third major title, I can't put it into words! I never dreamed of winning one, let alone three," Humphries responded afterwards.

The new world number three especially loved that he had beaten Michael van Gerwen, of all people, in the final. ''I'd love to have beaten Phil Taylor in a final but I never got that opportunity so the next best thing for me is [to beat] the great of our generation, Michael van Gerwen," he said. "To beat him in a final is what I always dreamed of. I watched this man seven or eight years ago being at the absolute peak of his career, winning everything [and hitting] 110 averages for fun."

For several weeks now, there have been debates about whether Humphries is now the best dart player in the world. Van Gerwen interfered in the debate Saturday by stating that he would never admit Humphries was the best. 'Cool Hand Luke' needed to beat Van Gerwen first, the three-time world champion felt.

And so now he has succeeded. ''To beat him in a final, I think this one probably does mean the most to me. It means I'm the best player in the world - he said I had to beat him in a final and I did! Michael was fantastic there, but he allowed me in."
