Luke Humphries hadn't played
European Tour darts since winning in Stuttgart with 'Cool Hand Luke' going to a friends' wedding instead of Zwolle but on his return at the
European Darts Matchplay, it was victory over Cameron Menzies in the opening tie of the evening.
Humphries was better on his doubling in particular with Menzies despite another ton plus average hitting 4/12 compared to 6/12 from the Newbury ace.
It was a close tie with both players holding their throws throughout until Humphries went 5-4 up and Menzies had missed darts to break him and it was Humphries turn to do so but to win the match as Menzies missed the chance at 70 to hold and 60 was pinned on double 20 to move through.
Scott Williams also continued his superb spell of form. Fresh off winning his ProTour, he edged past Jonny Clayton who has not looked at his best for some time and despite a 103 average, he fell 6-4 to 'Shaggy'.
Having trailed 4-0, Clayton worked his way back into the match but the damage was done as Williams survived the comeback and moved into the final day.
