Speaking to De Telegraaf, Michael van Gerwen has reacted for the first time to his defeat in the World Darts Championship quarterfinals against Scott Williams.
The 34-year-old Dutchman is still in the dark about how things went so badly wrong against the Englishman. ''I was devastated,'' Van Gerwen said. ''I've spent a day and a half looking for explanations, but I can't put my finger on it."
In two of the eight sets, Van Gerwen even threw an average below eighty. "I just called Vincent (Van der Voort, ed.) as well, but also had to tell him that I really don't know why that happens then. But it has happened more often, huh. That it was suddenly gone. That's also how I lost a couple of finals this year."
That's how 'Mighty Mike' lost a lead in the finals of the UK Open (against Andrew Gilding) and Players Championship Finals (against Luke Humphries). ''Maybe that gets in my head, breaks me up a little bit. Normally when I'm in a good mood like this World Championship too, not much can happen to me. It is something I have to think about. So far I have no idea, but I have to take it seriously."
On the evening of his exit, some stories appeared on social media with a possible cause of Van Gerwen's surprising elimination at the World Darts Championship. According to the man himself, none of that is true at all.
"Everything that has been said or written that it could possibly be, none of that is it and in any case did not affect my game at all. It would be very easy to make all kinds of excuses, but everyone knows I'm not one of those. This just wasn't the way I'm supposed to play."
