James Wade made it to the quarterfinals at the
World Matchplay for the first time since 2019. That was at the expense of defending champion
Nathan Aspinall on Tuesday night, who was defeated 11-8. It is for 'The Machine' his 12th quarterfinal at the World Matchplay, where he took the title in 2007.
With a 128 finish and a 14-darter, among others, Wade quickly took a 4-0 lead, but Aspinall was not about to give in without a fight. The fighter battled back to 5-5 after the break after a 109 check-out and a 14-darter, among other things.
The first six legs in the third session went with the darts. The decisive break then came in the seventeenth leg. Aspinall was not out in six visits, after which Wade broke him with a 17-darter. With another 17-darter, the left-handed darter doubled the margin, before Wade ended the match with a 15-darter.
Wade will take on Ross Smith in the last eight on Thursday night. 'Smudger' managed to win over Gerwyn Price in the second round. What remains for Aspinall now is the start of his rehabilitation project for his persistent arm injury. This treatment starts this Friday. Prior to the World Matchplay, 'The Asp' announced that he will not play any tournaments for the next two to three months.
