Jonny Clayton has advanced to the quarter-finals at the World Grand Prix at the expense of Ross Smith. Smith won the first set, but the match was a triumph for 'The Ferret' 3-1 in sets.
Smith had impressed in the first with a stunning victory over Gian van Veen. With the ninth highest average in tournament history, he convincingly defeated the Dutchman 2-0 in sets.
The Englishman now started the match well again. With an average of almost one hundred, "Smudger" won the first set 3-0, but the former European Championship winner then fell way back. Although Smith started the second set with a fine 145 finish, the next three legs went to Clayton. The Welshman then took the lead for the first time with a 15-darter in the first leg of the third set.
Smith's answer was a 15-darter in leg two, but "Smudger" then missed two chances to take over the lead. Clayton held his own leg before Smith forced a fifth. The final leg was started well by Clayton with a 112 score, but despite four missed opening doubles, Smith still had a chance to hijack the set from 110. 'Smudger' missed the double 16, however, after which Clayton claimed the set via a 21-darter.
Set four then went easily 3-1 to Clayton, who can report to the last eight at the World Grand Prix for the second time in his career. Last time Clayton made it to the quarterfinals at this event, he also ended up winning the tournament.
