Mervyn King stormed past
Rob Cross 10-5 in the Last 16 at the
Masters to move through to the Quarter Finals for the first time since 2014. It was yet another ton plus average for The King (101.64) compared to Cross’ 94.05.
An Incident did occur towards the end of the game when Cross had to move far wide of the oche to try and navigate his last dart into the double 16 bed which he successfully managed. However King began to question if Voltage had overstepped the mark to gain an unfair advantage. “I am one of these that if I see something that is wrong then I have got to say something. I did and unfortunately it was against one of my best mates. It does just leave a sour taste in your mouth when something like that happens'', he said afterwards during the press conference.
King also spoke about his words with referee George Noble after the game.“George said l I'm in front of it and you're behind it and it would be hard for me to see if I was the one behind it.” King then argued: “Well from where I was it definitely looked as though he encroached in front of the oche and I told him If I see it, I'm going to say it, I'm not one of these people that is just going to let it go.”
The former Masters finalist then stated referees should step in during future incidents like this. ''Even though it is not going to change the outcome of the game unfortunatley, things like that do need to be addressed and if for argument's sake you need to move further around the oche. There should be a line level with the oche so you know if you are in front or not.”
King will play Nathan Aspinall in the first game of the afternoon session on Sunday around 13:00 (UK Time) live on ITV 4.
