Luke Humphries did not have to get into top gear this Friday to qualify for the quarterfinals at the
Australian Darts Masters in Wollongong. He won 6-1 over Joe Comito, who posted an average of just 70.
Humphries has added a slew of television titles to his record this past year, but a
World Series title is still missing from his list of honors. In the previous nine regular World Series tournaments Humphries played, he never even made it to the finals.
The Englishman is now at least two wins away from a World Series final. 'Cool Hand Luke' immediately took a 2-0 lead by throwing a 74 finish in the first leg followed by a 19-darter in leg two. Comito then broke the reigning world champion in leg three, but Humphries then rushed to a 4-1 lead with a 12-darter and a 17-darter. Comito was then able to get on the scoreboard again, but he missed five chances to win leg six. Via double one, Humphries then made it 5-1. Then the world number one finished the job with a 120 finish for the match.
Michael Smith will also return to the quarterfinals of this World Series tournament on Saturday. 'Bullyboy' played a shaky match against Stuart Coburn, but pulled out a 6-2 win.
Smith shot out of the starting blocks with a 146 finish for a 12-darter in the first leg. The Englishman then doubled the lead with a 13-darter. However, Smith then missed seven chances to make it 3-0 before Coburn halved the deficit with a 26-darter. Smith won the fourth leg with a 15-darter and then took the fifth with a 20-darter. In the sixth leg, Coburn showed his darts skills by hitting a 10-darter. Smith then produced an 18-darter to take the lead to 5-2, before the St Helens darter closed with a fine 118 finish.
