In golf, it is a biennial highlight for players and supporters: the Ryder Cup, where Europe takes on the USA.
Paul Nicholson, a former PDC major winner, and massive golf lover, believes a similar concept could work equally as successfully in the sport of darts. "It's going to be a bigger success if you centralise it in Europe," Nicholson says, proposing a Team Great Britain vs Team Europe format. "Start on the right foot then maybe it could evolve."
Traditionally at the Ryder Cup, USA and Europe each have a team captain. Someone with experience but perhaps isn't at a good enough level to play in the team themselves at the moment. Who does Nicholson see as a suitable captain for this at a darts variant of the Ryder Cup?
"European captain? Someone like Vincent van der Voort," Nicholson suggests. "Then for GB? John Henderson."
Team competition
Nicholson therefore hopes the tournament will come soon. "The players and supporters would love the idea, I'm firmly convinced of that. It's something different for a change and what's more, besides the World Cup of Darts, it's another opportunity to play in a team competition."
