Ross Smith has moved into round 2 at the 2024 World Grand Prix with a statement victory over Gian Van Veen, averaging more than 100 and dropping just the one leg.
The Englishman had more experience at the World Grand Prix than his opponent and perhaps that showed. Smith has competed in the past three editions and managed to survive the first round each time. Smudger managed to take that step now as well.
Smith played one of the best matches ever in the opening round of this tournament. The former European Championship winner managed to record an average of 101.79. In addition, Smith also had a finishing percentage of 54.5 percent.
Van Veen got a few chances, but did not manage to take advantage of them. In the second leg of the first set, the Dutchman missed three chances to get on the scoreboard. Smith then threw a 15-darter to make it 2-0. A 14-darter then clinched the first set 3-0.
In the second set Van Veen immediately lost his own leg after two misses on the double. The Dutch darter made up for his misses with a 170 finish in the second leg, but lost his own leg again after a 13-darter from Smith. The latter then decided the match with a 16-darter.
In the second round of the World Grand Prix, Ross Smith will take on Jonny Clayton on Wednesday night. The Welshman, winner of this event in 2021, managed to win 2-0 in sets over Ritchie Edhouse in his first round match.
