Michael van Gerwen has not had the best year of his career. Still, the 35-year-old Dutchman is confidently looking forward to the World Cup, which kicks off on Dec. 15 at the iconic Alexandra Palace.
Van Gerwen may have reached the finals at both the Masters and the Grand Slam of Darts, but he did not manage to win a major this year, which remains poor considering his status. However, Van Gerwen hopes to change that at the upcoming World Darts Championship. "It's the biggest tournament of the year. Everyone is looking forward to that tournament, definitely me. I think I've had the best preparation so far for that tournament but there's still three weeks to go. So a lot can change in three weeks but I'm feeling good and that's the most important thing," said Van Gerwen.
"There's a different vibe, different pressures. Everything is different. Because it's the most important tournament of the year it should be different. For me the most important thing is that my preparation starts to take off well towards the World Championship as there's a lot at stake for everyone. This is bigger than ever."

Familiar faces
There were many different winners at majors this year, including Stephen Bunting, Mike De Decker and Ritchie Edhouse winning a PDC major for the first time in their careers. "I think at the World Championship you are going to see familiar faces."
"I don't have to deny, it's not been what I wish for but you need to make sure all the heads go in the right direction and all eyes are on this World Championship. I'm going to work hard for it."
He also admitted a fourth World title would probably be his best yet. "Probably yes. Every title has its own charm. But I'm looking forward to it."
Van Gerwen is exempt as the third seed in the first round and will next take on the winner of the duel between James Hurrell and Jim Long.
