Although he is now retired from full-time refereeing, 'The Voice of Darts'
Russ Bray remains one of the absolute icons in the darts world. The 67-year-old Englishman with the distinctive husky voice reffed the last World Darts Championship final and although he still remains active at the World Series of Darts, is now more of an ambassador for the PDC.
Over the years, Bray has become a well-liked figure in the darting community with fans and players alike, garnering his own legion of supporters in the process. This was something he was able to experience on his many trips throughout Europe and around the world during his work for the PDC over the last years.
"The biggest place for getting recognised is Germany!" Bray explains to Emma Paton on the latest episode of
Sky Sports Love The Darts podcast. "I'm very fortunate to be really noticed in Germany. There's times I've landed at the airport, in Dusseldorf or somewhere like that, I'll give them the passport and they go: 'Voice! Voice! Wait there!' They came around the side, got his camera out, quick picture. Then goes back in, stamps the passport and lets me through! That's happened seven or eight times."
"I flew into Warsaw, Poland last year. Same happened there. Same has happened in Czech Republic and Slovakia," Bray adds, highlighting the growing popularity of darts across the world. "It really is amazing."
