Van Barneveld reaches second round after seeing off Aspinall; Wilson edges out Wright

Raymond van Barneveld made a strong impression at the Players Championship Finals. Barney booked his place in the second round after seeing off Nathan Aspinall 6-2.
It was a showdown between two opposites. Van Barneveld is sliding further on the world ranking and retires after the upcoming World Championship. Aspinall, on the other hand, is the coming man and won his first major title this season.
However Van Barneveld showed that his class is permanent. He took a quick 2-0 lead with 88 and 94 checkouts. The Dutchman had chances to make 4-1, but missed three darts to extend his lead. Aspinall reduced the deficit to 3-2 after taking out 92.
After the break, the five-time World Champion stormed into a 5-2 lead, before he took out 100 to claim the win. Van Barneveld will face Joe Cullen in the second round on Saturday afternoon.
Rob Cross reached the last 32 after defeating Ron Meulenkamp 6-2. Jamie Hughes beat Jermaine Wattimena 6-3, while James Wilson edged out Peter Wright after a leg-decider.

- Many fans had a sour taste in their mouth by the end of this match. Mike was cruising to victory, playing beautiful darts, when the whistling started in earnest, particularly on his doubles. You could see in Mike's face that it was really affecting his concentration. The referee should have asked for order, just to show that the whistling is unacceptable, and Luke Littler could also have done his part to quieten down the crowd instead of "taking full advantage.:" I put that down to his age though. He needs some good advice on this from his management team and/or more seasoned players. It's got to be about who's best on the night, not who is being harassed by the crowd. Luke Littler played well to get back into the game and win, but it was a hollow victory. If he goes on to win the tournament, that triumph too will be tainted because of this match.
