Dirk van Duijvenbode lost to Jonny Clayton in the first round of the World Grand Prix on Monday night. The Dutchman still won the first set, but then got distracted by the crowd and lost 2-1 in sets to the defending champion.
"You sometimes have people who are fanatical and start shouting when a person throws," Van Duijvenbode responded afterwards to Viaplay. "When Jonny threw his last dart, you could hear: 'Come on Jonny!' But when I threw my second dart, it happened again. Continuously. It drove me crazy at one point.'
Van Duijvenbode tried to get security to stop the noisy fan, but failed. "I looked 2 sets at the security, but I couldn't get eye contact. I also looked at the fan, but that was not really to help. They are stupid excuses, because in the end I threw badly myself. I felt worldly this tournament and could have sent him (Clayton) home."
