Van Gerwen admits he should have more World titles: “It should have been five”

It is sometimes said about Michael van Gerwen that he won too few world titles in the years that he has been at the top.

Van Gerwen reached his first World Championship final during the 2013 edition and has been World Number zone since 2014. Yet he is 'only' at three world titles. He himself also thinks that this number should be higher, he acknowledges in conversation with NOS Sport.

"In my opinion it should have been five. You can only blame yourself for that, so you have to keep working hard to make sure it works. Whether it bothers me? No, but of course it's a shame, '' said Mighty Mike to NOS Sport.

This month his hunt for a fourth world title at the World Darts Championship begins. Van Gerwen seems to be back in shape on time.

After a number of disappointing months, the 31-year-old won the last major tournament prior to the World Championship. That was a welcome boost for self-confidence for him.

'Of course there were times when I wondered do I still want it. Yes, I still want it. Winning tournaments is the best, but if that does not come, it starts to grind you. You just have to make sure you win tournaments, because you will eventually be judged on that. ''
