Van Gerwen after securing semi-final spot at World Grand Prix: ‘I proved why you should never write off MVG’

Michael van Gerwen claimed victory over Mervyn King on Thursday night as the defence of his World Grand Prix title continues.

Van Gerwen will next face Chris Dobey and he stated that performance is why you should never write him off.

He gave King credit as well saying he is a top class player who pushed him to his limits and also admitted he is only going to get stronger now.

"I think it was a phenomenal game from both of us, but I proved why you should never write off MvG," said Van Gerwen.

"He pushed me through the roof, he never gave up and I think we saw Mervyn at his best tonight. He's a top class player with an incredible talent.

"Now I will have a good night's rest and I will be ready for tomorrow. I think the longer format will favour me in my game with Chris."
