Van Gerwen surges past Cullen in finishing masterclass to reach Queensland Darts Masters Final

Michael van Gerwen will face either Gerwyn Price or Gordon Mathers in the final of the Queensland Darts Masters in Townsville as the first tournament Down Under heads towards its conclusion.

Van Gerwen who hasn't been at his best over the past two days has as ever been saving some of his best darts and surged past Joe Cullen in a 7-5 win.

'The Rockstar' went 4-3 up but after the interval, Van Gerwen surged ahead and had a finishing masterclass with 7/7 on the outer ring putting his troubles during his ties against Bailey Marsh and Haupai Puha behind him.

Van Gerwen had a superb start and after losing the opening leg, he surged into a 3-1 lead with a break of throw.

But Cullen surged back breaking throw after Van Gerwen couldn’t get a shot at 96 and he hit 39 to make it 3-3. At the break, he smashed in a 145 checkout to go 4-3 up and take control.

Under threat of another break, Van Gerwen pinned double 20 twice for a 100 checkout and hit the front again with a break in a 127 checkout on the bull.

Van Gerwen continued to surge towards the finishing line consolidating the break with a 56 checkout. An 81 checkout saw Cullen hold as he looked to force a decider.

A 140 from Cullen saw him suddenly on a finish after a poor start to the leg but he couldn’t get a shot and Van Gerwen took aim at 80 nestling it into the corner of double 20.
