Van Gerwen survives late pressure from White to end World Matchplay Quarter-Final drought

Michael van Gerwen has made it through to the Quarter-Finals of the World Matchplay for the first time since 2017 as he aims to add to his two titles on the Winter Gardens stage.

This was after an 11-8 victory over Ian White who applied late pressure but it was the Green Machine who sparkled with a phenomenal 121 checkout on the bull after missing multiple sets of match darts. He will now face Nathan Aspinall in the Quarter-Finals.

White despite averaging eight less than Van Gerwen lead in the early going of the tie moving 4-3 up and despite MVG claiming a break finally, he couldn't consolidate and White made it 5-5 at the interval.

An 84 checkout and a 13-darter on double 16 though put Van Gerwen 7-5 up and two clear and despite White cutting the deficit, MVG continued to build his lead with a 13-darter to make it 8-6.

He then pounced on poor finishing from White with a 92 checkout to make it 9-6 and like his tie with Heta was making light work of the latter half of the match suddenly going one away.

Despite that though, it was prolonged as Van Gerwen missed two match darts at double 20 and White stayed alive with a 108 checkout to make it 10-7.

Van Gerwen continued to miss match darts and White broke to make it 10-8 and it was his throw to make it 10-9.

He missed 161 on the bull to hold throw but Van Gerwen didn't miss the same target with an incredible bull outshot off 121.
