Wright went 4-0 up and was seemingly cruising potentially towards a so-called 'Wrightwash' before Van Gerwen started to fire after initially averaging around mid 80's and left 'Snakebite' in the dust.
He reeled off eight legs in a row to see off the World Number One to add to his double Premier League Darts win and also European Tour win so far this season.
Adding to Danny Jansen who claimed a maiden title to begin the triple header in Barnsley, it is a Double Dutch triumph to begin proceedings.
It won't be back-to-back though for Van Gerwen who won't play tomorrow afternoon and will head home before next week's Premier League Darts and another ProTour double.
