Peter Wright claimed the 2021
World Matchplay adding the Phil Taylor Trophy to his list of TV titles with a 105.90 average to see off Dimitri van den Bergh in the final.
Wright despite winning wasn't pleased with certain aspects of his performance at times though and believes it may have been a different story had Van den Bergh been playing well.
"To have this trophy in my presence with all the names that have won it in the past. Obviously to play Dimitri in the final, he played brilliant throughout the whole tournament but he didn't quite turn up for the final. He missed a lot of crucial doubles and let me in," said Wright post match.
"It shouldn't have been 8-2 to me but I just went out and done my job and hit the doubles. I was trying to find bits of bursts of the game I was playing yesterday and which I've done in the tournament as well. The first dart wasn't really going in for me tonight but it was the doubles."
Difference maker and best in the world
In terms of the difference maker, Wright believes that only bringing two sets of darts with him helped him towards glory.
"I only bought two sets of darts like I did in the Europeans and I won that and it worked again so I've got to make sure I don't take 20 odd or 40 sets of darts with me to the next TV tournament."
Also when asked if he believes he is the best player in the world, he admitted the proof is in the pudding.
"There's loads of good players but today they weren't here and yes I am at the moment."
Living up to pre tournament promise
In the process also he lived up to his pre tournament promise in terms of winning the title with the next up being the World Championship.
"I might have a big mouth but I backed it up. I'm only going to get better so practice lads."
