Phil Taylor will make his appearance in early September at the World Seniors Darts Matchplay, one of the larger tournaments on the senior circuit for (famous) darters over the age of 50.
The 63-year-old is considered the most successful dart player of all time, but on the World Seniors Darts Tour (WSDT), Taylor still failed to win a tournament.
Taylor is most critical of that himself. ''Yes without doubt I am. I always think about where I’ve gone wrong and always thinking of ways to put the wrongs right. My dad always said you’re only as good as your last game and he was right,'' Taylor said on the World Seniors Darts Facebook page.
Last year, the 16-time world champion was close to the title at the World Seniors Darts Matchplay. He won 12-10 over Kevin Painter in the semifinals, but then lost to Robert Thornton (12-10) on the same night.
For Taylor, 44 legs in a two-hour span proved a little too much of a good thing. ''Absolutely fatigue kicked in but again I believe that what I am now doing will give me a better chance should the same situation arise. I will be better prepared."
The darts legend from Stoke-on-Trent recently announced that he has embraced a new fitness regime that should ensure he appears fitter at the oche.
Meanwhile, Taylor is already feeling a lot fitter. ''Very well to be honest I’m feeling good and I’m enjoying looking after myself hopefully a healthier Phil will help bring out the best in me. I think the only way to do that is be the best you that you can be a fitter you gives you more stamina but time waits for no man but I plan to push it back a bit.''
In the first round of the World Seniors Dart Matchplay, Taylor will take on his old rival John Part. ''Obviously, the world final that John won sticks with me but over the years we have had some great games John is a very good player very difficult to beat that’s why he’s a three times world Champion ( no fluke),'' Taylor stated.
Who does Taylor see as his biggest threat at the World Seniors Darts Matchplay? ''John Part. Never look beyond the person in front of you that would be foolish. They are all good players in their own right but as the old saying goes. Winning takes care of everything."
