Luke Humphries makes frank admission about mental health amid retirement fears

Luke Humphries has revealed that he is evaluating his career in professional darts due to mental health concerns.

Humphries made a statement that was widely shared on social media. In the statement, the 24-year-old explained that he would look to step back from darts in order to tackle an anxiety disorder. He shared the news after in the second round of the German Darts Open on Saturday afternoon. "I'm so sorry guys to lose that match but I must come clean and be honest with something that I'm not necessarily ashamed of, but something I have been struggling [with] for about 18 months now," the statement read. It continued: "I do have a very bad panic and anxiety disorder which does affect not only everyday life but my job as a professional darts player. "For me it's a time to reflect and see if I either have to stop playing darts now which would be totally heartbreaking, or get some specialist help in the near future. "But I have to walk away at this moment in time. "Thanks for everybody's support in the last few years it's very much appreciated."

"I haven't made a full decision yet"

Humphries, who has twice topped the PDC Development Tour Order of Merit, is regarded as one of the brightest talents in the game. The Newbury thrower knocked out defending champion Rob Cross en route to the quarter-finals of the 2019 PDC World Championship.
In more recent times, Humphries appeared as a Premier League Darts 'contender', drawing with Gerwyn Price in Exeter.
The current world number 57 told dartsnews.com that he may not appear at the midweek Players Championship events.
"Not definitely, as [I have] already been booked in, but I may pull out. I haven't made a full decision yet," said Humphries.
