Brian Raman obtained his PDC Tour Card early last year. But really, he had wanted to do so earlier.
Raman shared a remarkable story in conversation with the 'Double Top' podcast. "Actually, I wanted to go to Q-School back in 2019. However, my management banned me at the time. In early January, the birth of my daughter was scheduled and they felt my place was with my family. There was nothing to object to," he recalls. "However, I had discussed everything nicely with my girlfriend, who was totally okay with me going to Q-School. My daughter also ended up being born in December, but still my management stuck with the decision not to send me to Q-School."
Raman was obviously extremely disappointed. "I won a big regional tournament just before Q-School and hoped that would allow me to go to Q-School after all, but they wouldn't review their decision. I was really very angry at the time and didn't really understand it either."
Nevertheless, Raman didn't sit back. "It didn't really slow down my development in the end either," he says. "I then participated in the UK Open qualifying tournaments in England a bit later. In a pub there I had the whole crowd against me because I had to play an Englishman in the final, but I won and that's how I managed to qualify for this major. Later that year with the Denmark Open I also won my first WDF title and managed to qualify for the BDO World Championship."
"I often get told why I didn't go against my management's choice back then," the 27-year-old Belgian continued. "But I was just living with my girlfriend at the time and did not have the financial means myself to pay for a participation in Q-School. Moreover, that allowed me to play other tournaments, as I mentioned above. So when I look back on it now, it wasn't such a bad decision."
