'Former pantomime villain' Price receives fans honour: 'The fans' award means more to me than anything'

For years Gerwyn Price was taunted by the crowd during the televised tournaments, but gradually The Iceman's achievements became more and more appreciated.

The ultimate recognition form the fans came on Monday night. Price was voted PDC Fans' Player of the Year by the darts fans. An election where everyone could vote for a player. The newly crowned world champion won the election with more than 32 percent of the vote.

"The fans' award means more to me than anything I think. I've had them on my back for the last two-and-a-half years but that means everything. I've played pretty well this year but it's something I didn't think I'd win and I appreciate it'', Price told the PDC.

The current world number one was the big winner of the special awards broadcast with four awards. Price was also voted PDC Player of the Year, Pro Tour Player of the Year and was honored with the title PDPA Players' Player of the Year by his fellow darts colleagues.

"To have the top pros all voting for you [too], showing the respect that I probably deserve for the way I've played over the last 12 months [is] an important one to win'', he added.
