Michael van Gerwen failed to take the title at the New Zealand Darts Masters on Saturday. Mighty Mike' lost in the Quarter-Finals to Jonny Clayton (6-3).
Van Gerwen failed in the early stages to hit the doubles. First he missed four chances to make it 1-1, and a little later Van Gerwen also missed three chances to make it 2-2. Clayton was razor sharp on the finishes, throwing out 71, 80, 112 and 101.
''A frustrating end to the World Series'', concluded Van Gerwen on Twitter. ''I can only put the blame on myself for that. I missed too many doubles early in the match.''
The Dutchman looked forward to go home after three weeks in 'Down Under'. ''It is time to think of home and seeing my family. Thank you to Australia and New Zealand.''
