John Henderson captured the title Friday night at the Border Masters demonstration tournament in the Scottish town of Kelso. Gary Anderson showed great form during the event, but ultimately just missed out on the overall victory.
Anderson had recorded a whopping 118.66 average in his quarterfinal against Stuart Bell (3-0). Dirk van Duijvenbode also impressed in his match against Chris Harvey (3-2), in which the Dutchman threw a moyenne of 106.57. Henderson won in his quarterfinal against Kevin Ingles (3-0), while Phil Smith managed to surprise two-time major-winner Nathan Aspinall (3-2).
Anderson then triumphed in the semifinals against Van Duijvenbode. Thanks to an average of 106.07, it became 3-1 for "The Flying Scotsman. Henderson became the other finalist by defeating Phil Smith. In the Scottish final, Henderson then prevailed 3-2.
Many world top players play demonstrations during this period. Not primarily for a nice extra pocket money, but also to keep up match rhythm ahead of the PDC World Darts Championship.
