For the very first time in his career,
Matt Campbell triumphed on the iconic Ally Pally on Sunday afternoon. Despite going two sets up however, he didn't make it easy for himself as opponent
Lourence Ilagan came roaring back to 2-2, before Campbell sealed the win in set 5.
"After I won the first two I thought maybe I'd win the next set but it didn't work out that way," Campbell reflected in his post-match press conference. The Canadian actually missed darts for the 3-0 win, before seeing Ilagan fight his way back. "I felt the pressure from the first three darts. I put more pressure on myself than anyone can. Thankfully, I got through."
Competing at the
PDC World Darts Championship for the fifth time in his career, Campbell has never managed to win, despite some impressive performances in the past. Understandably, the feeling of finally getting the victory on darts' biggest stage is a great relief to the Canadian. "It's not like I'm a world champion. I've lost four times in a row so there's no pressure on me to win the first one!" Campbell laughs.
As Ilagan was fighting back, his celebrations were getting bigger and bigger. "I don't like that stuff but I've done it. In those moments, you've just got to let it out so fair play to him, he let it out, came back and still played strong," Campbell says. "I'd rather just throw my darts and get it over with but if it's a big shot, 100% let it out. With the cameras around it's what were supposed to do so I can't fault anybody."
With the illusive win now under his belt, can Campbell relax when he takes on James Wade in round 2? "It's James Wade. I can't relax against him at any time," Campbell laughs. "I'm always going to have that bit of pressure, just hopefully I'm able to control it."
