Two years after his debut, Ross Smith returns to the Winter Gardens again for the World Matchplay. In the intervening period, 'Smudger' has undergone tremendous development.
Meanwhile, Smith already stands at three PDC ranking titles, including a major title. In October 2022, the Englishman surprised by winning the European Championship. So the comparison with the darter Smith of two years ago is huge.
''I think I have more experience now and I know now how to prepare the right way (for matches and tournaments). The expectations are higher but that's what I want'', he said in an interview with Dartsnieuws.com.
If Smith uses his experience, he knows it can get pretty hot at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. That is something the 34-year-old is trying to prepare for. ''You can prepare by practicing with the heating on and using the correct equipment whilst on stage.''
In the first round of the World Matchplay, Smith takes on Dimitri van den Bergh. The prospects are good as Smith managed to win five of their seven previous encouters.
I look forward to playing Dimitri. I have a good record against him but I know I will have to bring my A game like I would against any of the other players.''
Looking further into the tournament, Smith and Van den Bergh are in the part of the draw where a surprising semi-finalist could happen. But Smith is not paying attention to that.
''I don't look beyond my opponent in any competition. I just try to beat the player in front of me and then the same in the next round and so on'', he added.
