Martin Schindler & Ryan Joyce have managed to qualify for the second round of the 2024 World Grand Prix on Monday night. The German and Englishman both defeated Brendan Dolan and Josh Rock, respectively, 2-0.
Schindler started his match against Dolan with a 14-darter to take an immediate 0-1 lead in the first set. In both the second and third leg, the German opened with his first dart, keeping the pressure on 'The History Maker'.
The Northern Irishman could not keep up with the level of 'The Wall' and did not get a chance at the double in a single leg. Schindler also remained strong on his closing doubles and won the first set convincingly 0-3.
In the opening leg of the second set, Dolan finally got a chance to throw on a closing double. With a hit double 16, he managed to get his first leg of the match. However, Schindler responded immediately and evened the score to 1-1. Dolan then missed two darts to regain the lead, after which the German was one leg away from victory via double 10. The Northern Irishman managed to come back to 2-2, but in the end Schindler proved too strong and took the win with a 49 finish.
In the first set between Rock and Joyce, the first four legs all went with the darts. Through two 21-darters and two 15-darters, the men balanced the opening set. In the fifth and decisive leg, however, "Relentless" managed to force an important break after the Northern Irishman missed three darts on the double. Joyce thus stole the first set in 21 darts and took the lead.
Joyce continued to perform convincingly in the second set, both opening and finishing, and quickly took an 0-2 lead in legs. In the third leg, Rock needed six darts to open, falling behind and appearing defeated.
Joyce continued to play solidly and eventually won the set easily 0-3. With this convincing 2-0 victory, he qualified for the second round, where he will face the winner of the match later tonight between Nathan Aspinall and Ryan Searle.
