Arguably the biggest and most controversial omission from the 2023 Premier League Darts lineup, Luke Humphries boosted his chances of competing in this year's edition greatly last weekend, taking his first major title at the World Grand Prix.
Despite now being considered by many a guaranteed addition to the 2024 Premier League season and moving up to world number 4 courtesy of his title win, Humphries isn't convinced of his inclusion just yet.
"Not necessarily," is his reply when asked by the Love the Darts podcast. "Last year I probably felt I should have got in but I didn't. So it's important to not start thinking about the Premier League too early."
"I should imagine, if I'm still in the top-4 I'll be in but that's not guaranteed," 'Cool Hand Luke' continues. "With my performances, not just winning that TV title but over the last 18 months, I've been one of the top players in the world so I think I deserve my opportunity."
"If I do get selected I'll really look forward to it because it's something that my game needs and I want it badly. What better way to get better at this game than to play the best players fifteen weeks straight. It'll benefit me massively because I can get a lot better than what I already am."
'I deserve Premier League opportunity' 💭@lukeh180 says winning the World Grand Prix does not guarantee him a spot in the 2024 Premier League line-up but do you think 'Cool Hand Luke' has earned the chance? 🤔#LoveTheDarts
