Michael van Gerwen has already been eliminated in the second round of the
Flanders Darts Trophy. The 35-year-old Dutchman was surprisingly defeated by
Gabriel Clemens on Saturday evening.
It was the first time in his career for "The German Giant" managed to win a match over Van Gerwen. In their previous seven encounters, they were all won by the mighty Dutchman.
Van Gerwen started the match with a neat 14-darter on his own throw, before Clemens managed to equalize again. Then "Mighty Mike" responded with a 12-darter, before Clemens also produced a 12-darter of his own. The fifth leg went to Van Gerwen with a 13-darter, after which Clemens again neatly threw out his own leg in five visits. The seventh leg also went with the darts. Clemens missed a break opportunity on the bullseye, after which Van Gerwen kept his own leg with a 64 finish.
In the eighth leg, Van Gerwen could not throw out 92, after which Clemens made it 4-4 with a 13-darter. The German then started Van Gerwen's leg with two 180s. With 'Mighty Mike' trailing by a large margin, Clemens took the leg with a 10-darter, after missing the double 18 for a nine-darter a turn earlier. Clemens then decided the match in fine fashion with a 104 finish.
The other German ace of the night did not make it against
Peter Wright however. The two-time world champion won 6-2 over
Martin Schindler, extending 'Snakebite''s win streak to eight consecutive matches.
The brand new German Darts Championship winner opened the match with a 12-darter and, after "double trouble," managed to make it 2-0 via a 23-darter. Schindler then missed two chances to win the third leg, before Wright countered with a 16-darter to make it 3-0. In the fourth leg, Schindler still got on the scoreboard via a 104 finish. Wright countered with an 11-darter, before Schindler was able to make it 2-4 with a 17-darter. Wright then finished the job with a 17-darter and an 11-darter.
