Cameron Menzies admits that having a job and working on the morning of the PDC
World Darts Championship actually helped him before he defeated Rusty-Jake Rodriguez.
It was a 3-0 win for the Scot who in particular was utterly superb on the outer ring and went from plumbing duty at 11am to winning at the World's just before 9pm on the same day. He said that admittedly it shows that darts is not his life and gives him perspective.
"I know I was working today, but it chilled me out. It made me realize that darts is a hobby and a very lucky hobby. I was so nervous today as I knew that game meant a lot, what happens now is a bonus but winning that game meant the world to me," he said post-match.
"Going to work just chilled me out and made me realize it's not the be-all and end-all. I'm a worker, of course, I'd like there to be a situation where I could give up my job and take this full time but I've got a long way to go."
But ahead of playing Dave Chisnall on Saturday afternoon, he won't encounter the same problem with Menzies not working weekends he joked.
"I don't work weekends thankfully. My company has been very good with me, I'll give them their dues. They've given me a lot of time off, it's just because it's this time of year, Christmas etc. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them. It just made me realise darts is a hobby that I'm not bad at but it's not my life."
